The driver will meet you at your hotel, meeting point or residence in the morning and embark on a scenic drive to Shai Hills Resource Reserve, which is about an hour from Ghana’s capital city and one of the closest wildlife viewing areas to Accra. It is known for its savannah landscape with mystifying rock formations, giant baobab trees and caves and upon arrival at the park, you will be welcomed by a large baboon troop at the front gate. The Reserve shows excellent opportunities for hikers to enjoy the serene and natural beauty of the park.
Arrive at the Reserve and enjoy a wonderful sightseeing. Activities to undertake include sightings of Kob antelope, bushbuck, colourful birds and monkeys. You can also travel the park by car or on foot with a local guide.
One could also enjoy the pleasure of visiting the Obonu Tem and Se Yo caves on the Hioweyo and Sayu hills. These ancestral caves were used by the Shai king until the end of the 19th century and highly defended in times of war due to the abundance of great stone rocks, a tunnel-like openings, and overhangs.
Continue your journey to Akosombo, enjoy lunch and visit the Dam, which is used to produce hydro-electricity. The Volta Lake is cited to be one of the worlds’ largest man-made water reservoirs, unfortunately, it is not able to meet Ghana’s growing demand for electricity. Undertake a guided tours of the Dam and its surroundings.
After your visit to the Dam, there are different water related activities available; for instance, you could rent a canoe or go for some swimming in a nearby pool, or undertake a guided boat trip on the river. A boat excursion to one of the islands in the middle of river could be organised.
Return to Accra by sunset to end your trip.
