We offer an opportunity to swim with one of most majestic creatures of our oceans; the Whale Shark. National Geographic rated Praia Do Tofo as having one of the largest juvenile Whale Shark populations in the world. These two hour trips leave from the dive centre on a daily basis at around 10h30. All gear are included.
Divemasters give a fifteen minute safety briefing before the launch. Part of this briefing is devoted to educating our swimmers on the importance of the correct interaction between us and the Whale Sharks. There are often chances to swim with Manta Rays and Dolphins on the safari as well. And from June to November here is a chance to add whale-watching to the experience as Humpback Whales cruise the coast on their annual migration. It is an experience not to be missed for both divers and non-divers.
Tofo is one of the best places in the world to see the majestic Whaleshark. Reaching lengths of 12 m, these harmless plankton feeders are the largest fish in the ocean and the prime attraction of our Ocean Safaris. They are present year round but their numbers peak in the summer months from November to March
When one of our experienced skippers spots a Whale Shark basking near the surface, he positions the boat so that the Whale Shark is swimming toward it. Once the motors are off, you quietly slide in the water and swim with the giant fish. It is an experience you will not soon forget
Although Whale Sharks are the main focus of the trip, they are by no means the only animals we see. Mantas fly gracefully through the water while Devil Rays (their smaller cousins) make acrobatic leaps into the air.
Loggerhead and Green Sea Turtles come to the surface to breathe. Pods of Indo-Pacific Bottle-nose Dolphins will sometimes ride the bow wave of our boat and may even allow us to snorkel with them. They are sometimes joined by their shyer and much rarer cousins, the Humpback Dolphin.
From June through October, it is also possible to see Humpback Whales as they migrate south toward their Antarctic feeding grounds. Mothers swim slowly with their calves while males sing and breach. We don't snorkel with the whales but seeing them in their natural habitat is an awesome experience.
Our Ocean safari boats are skippered by experienced and qualified captains. These snorkeling trips are led by qualified Divemasters or Rescue divers and all boats are fitted with communications and full safety gear.
