Antbear Lodge offers accommodation in a luxury cave. This is an accommodation unit built under a rock. Glass doors open onto a wooden deck with hammock chairs and a spectacular view of the Drakensberg Mountains. This is an up market Eco experience. The cave is cozy and comfortable and has features like a Jacuzzi spa bath, lounge with fire place and even has rock art on the walls. We also offer a private dining experience where we setup a table on the deck of your cave and you dine by candlelight under the stars.
So just what can you do to fill your days while you are here.
Day 1: Visit Giants Castle National Park and do some walking in the mountains. There are trails to fit everyone’s level of ability from half an hour stroll to 8 hours of heavy going. Whatever you choose you will be exposed to spectacular mountain views. And we can even supply you with a picnic lunch if you so desire
Day 2: Drive through the Midlands Meander with its quaint little coffee shops, arts and craft outlets and cheese, olive and wine tasting and visit the spectacular Nelson Mandela museum and sculpture. No need to take a packed lunch here as there are just so many great options. Our recommendation is the Bierfassl where you can also try some of the locally brewed craft beer.
Day 3: Visit Kamberg Nature Reserve and walk up to the rock art site called Game Pass Shelter. The Game Pass Shelter is commonly referred to as the “Rosetta Stone” of southern African rock art, for it was here that archaeologists first uncovered a vital key to deciphering the code of the Bushman rock art. It is nothing short of a world-class experience in Khoisan rock art and living Zulu and San culture. And to boot the walk to the rock art site is spectacular and exposes you to a beautiful waterfall and lovely views. Our tip is to view the video at the Rock Art Center before you start walking. It will change the dynamic with the guide to become a conversation rather than a lecture.
Day 4: Visit the bubbling Champagne Valley starting with a bird of prey show, visiting some beautiful waterfalls and having lunch at the Valley Bakery. The opportunity to do the Drakensberg Canopy Tour or downhill scooters offered by Scootours and then finishing off the day with the amazing Drakensberg Boys Choir performance (only avail on Wednesdays so perhaps its worth mixing the order of the days to accommodate this concert)
Hot air ballooning. Experience the awesome thrill and peaceful serenity of hot air ballooning on the edge of the Drakensberg mountains. Giants Castle, the Champagne Valley, the Kamberg Vallay. The hot air balloon take-off site is from Antbear Lodge and within sight of Giants Castle. What the launch of your balloon while enjoying a morning coffee with rusks. Once the hot air balloon is heated and you are in the balloons basket you will love your flight of around an hour. Views of the mountains, the possibility of flying over the neighboring game reserve, Wagondrift dam and the rolling hills of the Natal Midlands make this are perhaps one of the most spectacular areas to fly in anywhere. After helping to pack the hot air balloon you will return to a location to the lodge for a Champagne breakfast. (from R2700 per person)
Includea horse back trail through a private game reserve. An Exclusive Equestrian Experience is offered by Zulu Waters amongst an incredible array of game including two of the Big Five (Cape Buffalo and White Rhino). Two or Three hour horse trails are available with scrumptious picnic lunches on request. (from R350 per person)
Horse trails for beginners. The horse trails offered by Antbear Lodge are ideal for first timers. The horses are calm and slow and we use the gentler horse whispering techniques to train our horses. The landscape on the farm is beautiful. (R300 per person)
Much more … quad bikes trails, game drives, battlefield tours, white water rafting and so much more. or just relaxing and taking things easy with us at the lodge
